Hitech confirm 2022 Formula Regional Asian Championship driver line-up
Hitech Grand Prix are pleased to confirm their driver line-up for the upcoming 2022 Formula Regional Asian Championship. Formerly the FIA Asian Formula 3 Championship, the newly-named series will see Hitech compete across five rounds at Yas Marina Circuit and Dubai Autodrome, with the season set to get underway on the 20th January. The team’s line-up sees Gabriele Mini join Josh Dufek, Leonardo Fornaroli and Owen Tangavelou in a four-car entry, with the final driver(s) to be announced in due course.
Gabriele Mini will compete in two of the five rounds in a long-awaited season which offers FIA Super-License points. The Italian driver took championship victory in Italian F4 in 2020, securing twelve podiums and four wins. He also competed in the 2021 Formula Regional European Championship in a season that amassed four podiums and 7th in the standings overall. With his sights set firmly on a successful outing with Hitech, Mini commented, “I’m pleased to be joining Hitech for the first two rounds. It will be interesting to discover a new team, new tracks and to kick off my 2022 season. Although we are still in January, the winter break has already been too long so I’m looking forward to going racing again and to get more experience.”
Fresh off the back of his 2021 Formula 4 season, Josh Dufek will make the step up to Formula Regional Asia with Hitech in a few weeks time. The Swiss driver joins Hitech for the first three rounds of the series. His on-track record includes nine podium finishes and a victory in ADAC and Italian F4. Reflecting on the signing, Dufek added, “I am super excited to be teaming up with Hitech to compete in Formula Regional Asia and resume the racing very soon after a long winter break.”
Leonardo Fornaroli will join the team for the first three rounds of the championship. The Italian driver contested Italian Formula 4 in 2021, finishing 5th overall and taking seven podiums. He also went on to secure podium honours in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship in the same year. As the young driver prepares for the new challenge ahead, he added, “I am very excited to be joining Hitech in the Formula Regional Asian Championship. This is a great opportunity for me, because the team has always shown to be the right place for a young driver and I intend to make the most of this opportunity, while doing the best possible job for the team.”
Rounding out the team’s line-up will be FFSA Academy driver Owen Tangavelou, who will participate in the final three rounds. The French driver competed in the F4 French Championship in 2021, finishing fifth overall and claiming several podiums on debut. He will make the step up to Formula Regional Asia with Hitech, and adds, “I’m honoured to join Hitech and I thank the team for their trust in me. I’m going to do my best to represent them when we hit the track in a few weeks time. I am looking forward to the challenge ahead!”
In due course Hitech will announce their drivers for the final two rounds – with Leonardo Fornaroli and Joshua Dufek both heading back to Europe early to get their main racing campaigns underway and maintain their FRECA Rookie Status for the 2022 season.
Hitech Team Principal, Oliver Oakes, commented: “It is great to announce our line up for the upcoming FRAC Season with a good mix of drivers who know the Tatuus F3R from their season in ’21 and some talented F4 Drivers taking the next step in their careers.
Having been a founding team in FRAC / F3 ASIAN since 2018, once again Davide and his team at Top Speed have pulled together a good Series with Five Rounds all in the UAE to give drivers some decent seat time prior before they embark on their main racing season.”
