Ukyo Sasahara joins Hitech GP in 2019 Asian F3 Season Opener at Sepang Circuit

Porsche Japan Junior driver Ukyo Sasahara will be joining Hitech GP this weekend for the opening round of the Asian F3 Championship at Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.

Starting his motorsport career in karting in 2003, Ukyo has a wealth of experience behind the wheel. Debuting in single-seaters in 2013, the 22-year-old Japanese driver competed in the Formula Renault ALPS, followed by a campaign in Formula Renault 2.0 NEC the following year.

In 2015, Ukyo finished third in the Formula Renault NEC championship, accompanied by a seventh place in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup the same year. His success didn’t stop there, however. He graduated to the FIA F4 Japanese Championship the subsequent year, securing second place in the standings, and soon went onto claim third in the Japanese Formula 3 Championship.

Making his 2019 debut in GT’s, Ukyo will compete as a Porsche Junior Driver in the Porsche Carrera Cup Japan. Ahead of the season getting underway next week, he will fill the seat of the Tatuus T-318 machinery with Hitech GP this weekend in the opening round of the FIA F3 Asian Championship at Sepang International Circuit.

Having secured the driver and team’s title in the inaugural Asian F3 championship last year, Hitech GP will be battling for the top step in the upcoming 2019 Asian F3 Championship, set to take place over five rounds across Asia.

Reflecting on the signing with Hitech GP for the first round of the Asian F3 Championship, Ukyo commented:

“I’m delighted to compete with Hitech GP in the first round of the Asian F3 Championship at Sepang International Circuit. Despite the late call up, I will dedicate myself to the job, with the help of the strong team. Everything will be a new experience to me here. It goes without saying a huge thank you to Oliver Oakes and Hitech for this opportunity. Also thanks to Porsche Japan and all of my sponsors who willingly allowed me to compete in the Asian F3 Championship this weekend.“

Hitech GP’s Asian F3 Team Manager, Phil Blow, added:

We’re delighted to add Ukyo to our line-up at Sepang this weekend. His proven experience in single-seaters should put us in a good position to secure some valuable points. Our aim is to start the Asian F3 championship on a high.”

Qualifying gets underway on Friday, April 5th at 17:30 local time (GMT+8). Races 1 and 2 will be held on Saturday at 10:00 and 14:20 local time respectively, followed by Race 3 on Sunday, April 7 at 13:50. All races will be live streamed on www.f3asia.com and on the series’ Facebook page.
